Have you ever found yourself so lost in a project that you lose track of time during the day?

It's been a while since that's happened to me, and it's where I've found myself for the last few weeks. I'm deep in the bowels of an email design system, getting all the little details up and running. The structure's been done for a while, and I was waiting for design's blessing to really start coding – and here we are.

In a mid-project twist, I had to convert all my javascript to liquid. There was no way I was about to do this from scratch. AI felt ... convenient. I've never let Claude this deeply into any of my coding projects before.

This all feels really exciting and scary at the same time. In one go, Claude had code snippets, variables, and the typescript fields all up and running.

Overall, Claude did an amazing job. In what probably would have taken me weeks manually, Claude helped me code in a day and a half.

I find now though, that I'm stuck in a very particular loop:

  • Claude writes a bunch of code for me
  • I test
  • I need to make a minor change
  • I have no idea where the code resides
  • I ask Claude to make the change
  • Cycle continues

This has resulted in me asking Claude to comment on everything and format it in ways that make it easier to read. It's helped a little, yet I've still found the pull of just asking AI to do everything to be really strong.

I'm writing this as Claude runs a bunch of easy changes for me. Which on one hand ... neat! I can work on other things! On the other hand ... is this what coding is now? Just prompting the AI to do it for you?

I have found myself just a little more open to how AI can help me, I just need to keep myself in check to make sure I don't hand over too much thinking to a machine.
